Before & After Your Massage: Everything You Wanted to Know (But Were Afraid to Ask)
At Cali Calm, we believe massage should feel relaxing long before you step onto the table. Yet for many people, anxiety starts before they even arrive.
“Do I have to get completely undressed?”
“Should I shave my legs?”
“What if I didn’t have time to shower?”
“Am I supposed to wipe all the oil off afterward?”
If you’ve wondered any of these things, you’re not alone. Let’s normalize the experience so you can focus on what matters most—feeling better.
Before Your Treatment
Getting Undressed is Completely Normal
This is probably the biggest concern people have.
Yes, most massage therapists expect clients to undress to their comfort level. For a full-body massage, working directly on the skin allows us to provide the most effective treatment. Clothing and underwear create barriers that limit our ability to work the hips, glutes, lower back, and upper legs—areas that often hold the most tension.
Your therapist isn’t judging your body, and they certainly aren’t interpreting your choice to undress as a personal advance. It’s simply part of the profession.
Massage therapists spend thousands of hours learning anatomy, movement, and therapeutic techniques. During your session, we’re focused on muscles—not appearances.
You’ll always be professionally draped with a sheet or blanket. Only the area being worked on is uncovered, while the rest of your body remains covered and protected. Your privacy and comfort are always the priority.
Underwear Isn’t Necessary
Many first-time clients keep their underwear on because it feels safer.
While you’re always welcome to choose your own comfort level, underwear can get in the way of treating important muscle groups around the hips, glutes, sacrum, and upper hamstrings. These areas are connected to the low back and are common sources of pain and stiffness.
Without underwear, your therapist can work more effectively while still maintaining professional draping throughout the entire session.
Please Don’t Stress About Shaving
Life is busy.
You have work, kids, errands, workouts, and responsibilities. Whether your legs haven’t been shaved in weeks or months honestly doesn’t matter.
Massage therapists don’t notice, and if we do, we don’t care.
Hair is normal. Bodies are normal. We’re here to help you feel better—not to evaluate your grooming habits.
You Don’t Need to Shower Right Before
Another myth: you need to arrive perfectly polished.
Of course, basic hygiene is appreciated, but we understand real life.
Maybe you came straight from work.
Maybe you squeezed your appointment in between soccer practice and grocery shopping.
Maybe you’ve been outside all day.
That’s okay.
We’re treating humans—not mannequins.
After Your Treatment
Don’t Rush Back to Work
One of the best gifts you can give yourself is time.
Try scheduling your massage when you don’t have to jump immediately back into meetings, errands, or stressful responsibilities.
Think of massage as pressing the reset button on your nervous system.
If possible:
Go home.
Drink plenty of water.
Take a walk.
Read a book.
Stretch gently.
Take a nap.
Eat a nourishing meal.
Let your body enjoy the work that’s been done.
The more you can stay relaxed afterward, the longer you’ll enjoy the benefits.
Leave the Oil On
Many people rush to the shower because they don’t like feeling oily.
Here’s something you may not know:
Massage oils are wonderful for your skin.
Quality massage oils help moisturize, soften, and protect the skin’s natural barrier. Unless you simply prefer to shower, there’s no medical reason to wash them off immediately.
Instead, let your skin absorb the nourishing oils while your muscles continue relaxing.
If you’re heading home afterward, enjoy that post-massage glow a little longer.
Listen to Your Body
Some people feel energized after a massage.
Others feel sleepy.
Both responses are completely normal.
Your body has just experienced therapeutic work that affects muscles, circulation, and your nervous system. Give yourself permission to slow down and notice how you feel.
Massage is Healthcare, Not Luxury
The conversation around massage has changed over the years.
Today, therapeutic massage is widely recognized as an important part of overall wellness and healthcare. People seek massage for pain relief, stress reduction, injury recovery, improved mobility, better sleep, and mental well-being.
There’s nothing embarrassing about receiving massage. There’s nothing unusual about undressing for treatment. There’s nothing to apologize for if you skipped shaving or didn’t have time for a perfect shower.
You’re human.
We’re professionals.
Our job is to create a safe, respectful environment where your body can relax, recover, and heal.
At Cali Calm, we want every client to walk through the door feeling comfortable, informed, and cared for. The less you worry about the “rules,” the more you can enjoy what massage is really about: taking care of yourself.
You deserve that time. You deserve that care. And yes—you deserve to feel calm.
